Evensong: That Moment When

That moment when
there’s nothing left to say
No music left to play
The end of the day.

Lookin’ back over my life
All the dreams I dreamed
that never saw light,
The could’ve beens
that never came to be.

The loves that died in my heart.
The songs that from
my lips won’t part.
The chances I never took,
The unwritten books—
pages upon pages
never shared.

Wandering around this house of ruins
Wondering what the hell I am doing
Wondering why I still draw breath.

Then I remember the morning past,
breathing in the steamy summer air,
Praying that the heat
wouldn’t kill my baby roses,
Astonished how the sun drew out
the daylilies tall and straight.

It didn’t matter then
that I’ve forgotten how
to play guitar…
I can still tickle those ivories
now and again…

That moment when
there’s nothing left to say
No Music left to play

The end of another day
